The Royal Chapel, developed in the 1790's, is near the site of the original presidio. At the time, all structures were built of mud and logs and Font found them a disgrace, writing : "The commander, indeed, had to lodge in the storehouse, and I in a dirty little room full of lime, while the rest of the people accommodated themselves in the plaza with their tents as best they could."
