A mule is a cross between a horse and a donkey. Mules, like horses, range in size from large draft mules to those that are the size of ponies. Mules are very strong and intelligent. They can carry more than most horses and so are good as pack animals. Anza used mules to carry supplies for the expedition (e.g., food, tents, cooking pots) and the possessions of the colonists (e.g., clothes, bedding, etc.).

The Spanish word for mule is "mula". (D.G.)
