Padre Francisco Hermenegildo Garcés was chaplain for Anza's first expedition, along with Padre Juan Diaz. On the second, or colonizing expedition, Padres Garcés and Tomás Eixarch went as far as the Yuma settlement at the junction of the Colorado and Gila Rivers. There Padre Eixarch began teaching Catholic doctrine to the Yuma Indians in preparation for the establishment of a mission. Padre Garcés explored north along the Colorado River. Several years later, both Padres Garcés and Diaz would be killed by the Yumas who had become disgruntled because the Spanish government did not fulfill the promises that Juan Bautista de Anza had made them.
