The Anza colonizing expedition passed where Mission San Juan Bautistia, named for John The Baptist, was founded 21 years later on June 24, 1797. This mission, built on El Camino Real ("The King's Highway"), stands on the very edge of the great San Andreas earthquake fault that nearly destroyed San Francisco approximately 100 miles north and also did serious damage to this mission. The mission today is an active parish and tourist destination.
