The Gila River was not flowing at the surface when the Anza expedition reached its banks. Water was obtained by digging wells. The Gila River had been explored since the time of the Jesuits. The expedition followed the Gila trail, clearly an established indigenous route prior to Anza, which years later became a roadway that gave its name to the Southern route to the California gold fields.
