Anza and Font took a six mile side trip to visit Casa Grande, once a large cluster of dwellings which they had learned from earlier Spanish explorers' journals. Font noted, "The Casa Grande, or Palace of Montezuma, must have been built some five hundred years ago..." Both Anza and Font recorded measurements of the ruins in which the edifice had three stories, the lowest level being below ground like a "subterranean room". According to Font, this ancient dwelling had suffered damage from Apaches. Casa Grande is now a National Monument.
