San Javier del Bac known today as the White Dove of the Desert, had been founded by Father Kino, about 1692, and was on the rim of Spanish influence in the Southwest. Father Garces was serving here when he was called to rejoin Anza and go with him as far as the Colorado. The mission has been rebuilt several times. A few miles from the mission was the small Spanish settlement of San Agustin de Pueblito de Tucson, now the site of present day Tucson. times.
