The Anza colonizing expedition found the way to the Nogales wash which led them down to the Santa Cruz River Valley and on to Mission San Jose de Tumacacori -a key landmark, situated below the Presidio of Tubac. Today, Tumacacori National Historic Park preserves remnants of two additional Spanish frontier missions, Mission San Cayetano de Calabasas and Mission Guevavi in southern Arizona. The mission of San Jose de Tumacacori was abandoned in 1848, but the cultural legacy of the turbulent mission endures.
