At this point Anza took a different route than was normally traveled to avoid being detected by the Comanches.  Later, when traveling thorough the San Luis Valley of Colorado, the expedition traveled at night under the light of the full moon to avoid being seen by Comanche scouts in the Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) Mountains.
