One of the oldest Spanish settlements in New Mexico, San Juan Pueblo is north of Santa Fe on the Río Grande. It was originally the Pueblo community of "Okhe Oweenge" which Juan de Oñate first entered in 1598.  He soon changed the name to "San Juan de los Caballeros."
